⚔️ Rules

Participants Eligibility#

For the beginners category:

• No more than 2 years of HEMA experience
• No medals or record of major success (like top-16 at big tournaments) from any HEMA tournaments
• No medals from related sports (tap fight, buhurt, olympic fencing)

For women’s category:

• No experience or medal restrictions

General Rules#

Group phase - 3 minutes or 7 exchanges. Eliminations - 3 minutes or 7 exchanges. Finals - 3 “rounds” x (3 minutes or 7 exchanges); winner is the one who wins two “rounds”.

Exchange repeats: no exchange, yellow card Everything else, including a red card and ring out counts as an exchange

Points:

• 3 points thrust in a deep target (head, neck and torso)
• 1 point everything else.
• Weighted Afterblow attacker (aka thrust to the deep target vs anything else = 2 points, everything else 0)
• Double hit priority (1. thrust to the deep target, 2. thrust to the shallow target, 3. cut to the deep target, 4. cut to the shallow target), higher priority = 1 point; same priority = 0 points.
• 2 points: disarm / opponent losing the sword
• 1 point ring out
• 3 points red card
• No points: deflection of the blade (not grabbing)

Forbidden:

• pommel strikes
• wrestling, including grabbing arms and weapon In case of hand-to-hand combat situation, the fight is immediately stopped (no exchange)
• forbidden zones: back of the head, spine, groin, foot, back of the knee

Tiebreakers in the case of same number of points in groups:

• Head-to-head match score (in case of two fighters)
• Number of double hits (fewer is better)
• Difference in points (more is better)
• Random draw or “sudden death” exchange

Gear Requirements#

Weapon#

• Renaissance-style rapier blade and hilt
• Weight: 900–1300 g
• Length: 100–130 cm
• Rolled, thick, or spatulated tip
• Blade flex: 4–9 kg

Protective Equipment#

• No exposed skin
• No open metal protection (except for mask)
• Mask (350N min) with back-of-head protection
• Padded jacket
• Gorget
• Rigid chest protection
• Rigid elbow and knee protection
• Shin guards
• Gloves (padded gloves recommended)
• Groin protection (for men)
